LAKEVIEW CEMETERY SEXTON JOB DESCRIPTION
Hired by the Lakeview Cemetery Board
Pay is Annual Salary paid weekly
(weekend burial pay of $25 for Saturday and $50 for Sunday burials)
Hours are as required (may require some weekends)
Reports to Lakeview Cemetery Board
Sexton; duties
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the
following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties
which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully,
an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
1. Organizes materials and manpower to achieve established work priorities and
complete designated projects.
2. Completes a full range of grounds maintenance activities for the cemetery and
related facilities including mowing, trimming and pruning, weed control,
planting, seeding, fertilizing, and watering.
3. Completes the location, opening and closing of gravesites and construction of
marker foundations.
4. Completes the removal of leaves, snow, and ice, and the application of salt,
sand and other preventive material in the cemetery, its facilities, and in other
locations as directed.
5. Operates and directs operation of a full range of public works vehicles,
equipment and tools used in cemetery maintenance and grave openings and
closings.
6. Performs basic preventive maintenance and repairs on a variety of equipment
and tools including cleaning, greasing and oiling.
7. Inspects cemetery grounds and facilities to determine maintenance needs and
assure compliance with standards.
8. Assists the public in locating gravesites, purchasing lots, and coordinating
process with funeral directors and monument companies. Maintains burial permits
and other cemetery records (under the Village Clerk’s supervision), and assists
the public with research requests. Responds to complaints or inquires from the
public.
Required knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills,
abilities and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential
functions of this position.
1. Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, materials and equipment used in
cemetery grounds and facilities maintenance
2. Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, equipment and power tools
3. Skill in performing basic maintenance tasks on assigned equipment, buildings
and facilities
4. Ability to critically assess situations and solve problems, and to work
effectively under stress, within deadlines and changes in work priorities
5. Ability to evaluate the work of others
Physical demands and work environment
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are
representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential

1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required
to perform heavy manual labor and travel to other locations. The employee is
regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach
with hands and arms; and talk and hear; and view work objects. The employee is
frequently required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or sit.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects of very heavy weight.
2. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to
outside weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold and wet and/or humid
conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts;
confined spaces. The employee may be occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic
chemicals, risk or electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work
environment can range from moderate to very loud.
3. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work
on weekends as needed for burials. The employee may also be asked to attend
committee meetings as a non voting person.
4. A physical examination, at the expense of the Village, is required upon
employment
Preferred education, skills, and/or experience
1. An employee is required to have the following: a high school diploma or
general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or
training; or equivalent combination or education and experience.
2. An employee must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as
safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. An
employee must have the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers
or employees of the Village, including the Cemetery Board and/or Village
Council.
3. An employee must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in
all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. An
employee must be able to compute rates, including lot cost and burial costs.
4. An employee must have the ability to reasonably respond to instructions
furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. An employee must be able to deal
with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
5. An employee must have the following: a current Michigan driver’s license, and
any other permits needed to operate vehicles or equipment as required by the
state of Michigan or the Village of Nashville.
