POLICE SERGEANT JOB DESCRIPTON

Police Sergeant
Hourly pay set by council (per four year pay schedule)
overtime pay allowed
Supervisor – Police Chief

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES

The Sergeant supervises the patrol officers and the clerical.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
An employee in this position may be called upon to do the following essential duties: (other duties may be assigned)

Police Sergeant is second in command of the department and shall be on duty 40 hours per week

Shift commander, assures that orders, directives, communications, etc. of the Chief of Police, and investigations are carried out in the form of assignments and/or by relaying them to personnel

Briefs on-coming shift and/or supervisor of assignments and events - Assures the staff are informed of department orders, directives and policies

Provides advice, assistance and supervision to police personnel in a variety of law enforcement situations through assignments and on-call duty status - Assumes command at major accidents, crime scenes, and other situations requiring supervisory assistance

Assign work to, checks the work of, and evaluates the overall job performance of subordinates. Reviews and assures that all assignments are completed satisfactorily


Reviews daily reports of police officers for procedure, accuracy and completeness and prepares an activity log of the Sergeant’s activities

Conducts evaluations of officers offering suggestions, providing and/or recommending formal training and/or, when appropriate, initiates rewards or disciplinary action (under Police Chief’s orders)

Assists in developing goals for the department and develops long and short-term goals for self and others

Develops and implements plans designed to ensure the accomplishment of division goals and participates in the development of overall departmental plans

Assists in policy development and implementation

Investigates and takes the appropriate action regarding complaints made by or against departmental personnel (along with the Police Chief)

Assigns tasks and work priorities

Inspects department equipment, facility and vehicles to determine compliance with established standards and takes corrective action when necessary (under Police Chief’s orders)

Regularly check on the availability of supplies needed by officers. Requisitions the reordering of supplies as necessary

Performs the duties of a Patrol Officer

Available for on-call status along with other supervisory personnel to provide supervision

Make public speeches to clubs and other local groups in the interests of the department and crime prevention.

Type and prepare reports, logs and statistical reports as may be required. Make computer data entries

Provide assigned in-service training

May be assigned to perform internal affair investigation

Directs and coordinates community and educational services

Performs other duties as needed

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Police academy graduate, must pass the Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Training Council testing for reading/writing and physical skills – Must be M.L.E.O.T.C. certified or certifiable

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF
Current management and supervisory principles - The Department policies, procedures and practices – Liaison and cooperative arrangements that exist between the Department and other agencies for coordination of law enforcement efforts – Applicable Federal, State and Local laws and the limitations on police authority to protect the safety and rights of citizens – Principals,

practices and procedures of criminal detection and investigation to thoroughly follow up on complaints

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals - Ability to write routine reports and correspondence - Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization – Ability to give and/or follow written and oral instructions in routine and emergency situations

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals - Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists – Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form – Ability to prioritize work under changing and/or stressful situations to complete duties – Ability to maintain a calm disposition to properly gather and disseminate information for the benefit of the public and the department – Ability to work as a team member

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Current Michigan driver’s license – and all valid certificates outlined by MCEOTC to be a certified officer

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to handle any situation that they come upon and/or they are brought into – Ability to take commands and display leadership – Ability to delegate responsibilities and follow up to assure that tasks are properly completed - Ability to listen and relay accurate information; both written and orally – To work with the public and others effectively; under sometimes stressful situations – Skilled in the techniques of fingerprinting, photography and processing evidence to process criminal suspects and safeguard evidence – Able to use police vehicles, communications, equipment and firearms to process criminal suspects and safeguard evidence
